Matthew Reidy was recently named this year’s Team Captain of the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings.

Reidy said it was an honour to get voted in by his coaches and teammates.

“I think of the captains that I've had before this and it's an honor, I'm excited.”

Several of Reidy’s old teammates from the Red Wings reached out to him to congratulate him.

“It means a lot,” he said. “It's always good to hear from a guy that you played with in the past, and they're all good guys.”

Reidy talked about his leadership style.

“I think I like to lead the team by showing them how it's done, not telling them how it's done, just kind of if you watch me and you follow the way I play, then I think we'll be good.”

He said he wasn't expecting to be this year’s Captain.

“There was no captain last year at the end of the year, and I was one of the four assistants. I just thought there would be a captain, didn't know who, but I'm excited and I'm happy it's me.”

Eduard Wruck, Ian Maier, and Mathieu Gautier are this year’s Assistant Captains.

“It's awesome, I've played with Ian now for two years. I played with Gautier, I’ve known him for a long time, and I know Wruck. I'm happy to be standing there next to those three."

The team kicks off their season this evening. Catch all the action on Great Plains Ford Red Wings Radio Big 106, starting with the pregame show at 6:45 p.m.
