It was a split weekend between the Dryden GM Ice Dogs and the Red Lake Miners as they treated Kenora spectators to some intense SIJHL Hockey. As part of a fundraiser for Triple PLAY Kenora, St. Thomas Aquinas and Beaver Brae – the Dogs took both Friday and Saturday games 4-2.
Bat Intentions and Northern Neechees hosted an 8-team co-ed slo-pitch tournament over the weekend, with proceeds going to support local treaty 3 men and women's team in the Native American First Nation World Series in Nevada. It was the Angels who defeated the Benchwarmers in the finals.
The Toronto Blue Jays are on the road as they begin a two-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies tonight. Ross Stripling gets the start for the Jays against Philadelphia's Kyle Gibson.
The Jays have won six of their last 10 games and sit first in the A-L wild-card standings. The Phillies have lost four straight but still hold the third wild-card spot in the National League.
PK Subban announced his retirement today after 13 seasons in the NHL.
Subban won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenceman in 2013 as a member of the Montreal Canadiens. Subban spent seven seasons with the Habs, three years with the Nashville Predators and his final two campaigns with the New Jersey Devils.
Last year he won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for his leadership and humanitarian efforts.
