The Dryden GM Ice Dogs are gearing up for their season opener this weekend.

The Dogs will be up against Kam River and the Fighting Walleye at 7:30 p.m. Friday night, at the Dryden Memorial Arena. It’s the first of a back-to-back at home, with another 7:30 p.m. puck drop on Saturday.

The Ice Dogs will have a six-day break before they face off against the Wisconsin Lumberjacks on September 30, once again at home.

The Toronto Blue Jays finish off a two-game series against the Phillies in Philadelphia tonight. The Jays generated 21 hits to rough up the Phillies 18-11 last night.

Toronto has won five of seven games and now holds a firm grip on the top wild-card spot in the American League. Kevin Gausman starts for the Jays against Zack Wheeler of the Phillies.

Three star NHL blue-liners have announced that they’re hanging up their skates.

P-K Subban, a longtime star with the Montreal Canadiens before playing in Nashville and New Jersey, announced his retirement, as has Zdeno Chara, who played 14 of his 24 seasons in Boston and led the Bruins to the Stanley Cup in 2011. And Keith Yandle is retiring after a 16-year career that included a record streak of 989 consecutive games played.
