South Central Cancer Resource (SCCR) is looking for board members that can make responsible, prudent decisions to provide leadership to the organization. Recently a few members have resigned from the board for various reasons.
King described some of the work SCCR provides to people going through the Cancer journey.
"We provide hope for people, and I think that's probably the biggest thing that we can do through the transportation program, which is so generously funded by all of our donors right across the whole area, right from Cartwright to Emerson Letellier to the American border up to Carman, we cover a huge area. What we're looking for is board members from the different communities across the region that we cover."
She explained the commitment required to be a good board member.
"To be a board member is very rewarding. It's not a huge commitment. We meet 9 times a year. We don't meet during the summer, and we don't meet during December. There are committees we ask you to belong to, but there's no total commitment to that. We have a Finance Committee, we have a fundraising committee, which is a fun committee, they get to do all sorts of fun things. We have a Programs, Policies and Procedure Committee and we look after the policies for the organization, the various programs that we have."
King shared why she likes serving in this way.
"The highlight for me is seeing the families and cancer patients get through their cancer journey and that we were able to help them. The other one is the amazing support that we receive from all the communities in the area that we serve." adding her own reflection on her service, "Being a board member has been an honor and a privilege. I have valued that so much. I have met so many wonderful people, learned so much, and I can't stress it enough how rewarding it is. there's work, but it's good work."
King encouraged interested people to attend a SCCR Board Meeting to listen to the board, meet the board and ask questions.
