Portage la Prairie RCMP had their hands full last week after two separate road incidents resulted in drivers being fined, as well as one facing charges.
RCMP says on October 14th, at 7:04 a.m., they received a report of a two-vehicle collision at the corner of 3rd Street NE and Dickens Avenue. A vehicle was at the stop sign on Dickens Avenue facing east when they were sideswiped. The travelling car then hit a ditch.
When officers arrived, the Portage Fire Department and EMS were already on the scene. The 28-year-old female driver from Portage was not opening her doors. The driver was eventually removed from the car without injury.
When the driver was taken back to the RCMP detachment she refused to provide breath samples. She faces charges of Refusing to Comply with Breath Demand. Her vehicle has also been impounded for 60 days. She also received two tickets under the Highway Traffic Act for a total of $440.00. The driver was released to appear in court at a later date.
The driver in the sideswiped vehicle was not injured.
Later that week, on October 16th, an officer was making patrols around 12:30 a.m. and saw a vehicle go through an intersection without stopping at the stop sign at 8th Street NW and 6th Avenue.
The officer held a traffic stop with the 27-year-old female driver from Long Plain First Nation. When the driver was asked to provide a breath sample on a Roadside Screening Device, the result was a fail. She was given an Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition.
The driver's car has been impounded for 30 days, she lost her licence for 90 days, and she will have to pay a $700 administrative penalty. The driver also received three tickets under the Highway Traffic Act which totalled $614.00.
