The first Colorado low of the season has come and gone in Southern Manitoba, and as forecast, it was a rain event rather than the typical snow we expect from those types of systems.
“With the vast majority of Southern Manitoba staying within the warm side of the low, that meant the precipitation we received remained as rainfall,” explained CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. “There were on again, off again, showers for much for the day, but based on Rainwatcher reports most of the rain arrived before mid-morning Monday.”
The following totals are courtesy the Manitoba Ag Weather Network, Environment Canada and PembinaValleyOnline Rainwatchers. They are for October 24th:
Winnipeg (Airport) – 33.3mm (about 1.3 inches)
Portage la Prairie – 28.3mm
Carman – 24.2mm (a little less than 1 inch)
Winkler (south of city) – 23.9mm
Morden (two miles south) – 22.5mm (9/10th)
Altona (in town) – 21mm
Clearwater – 19.1mm
Gnadenthal – 18.8mm (3/4 inch)
Brandon – 18.1mm
Kane – 16.9mm
Steinbach – 16.6mm
Altona (rural)/Dominion City – 16.5mm
Morris – 15mm (7/10th)
Manitou – 13.4mm
Brunkild – 13.5mm
Emerson – 9.5mm (a little less than 4/10th)

According to Sumner, we can expect well below average temperatures for Tuesday and Wednesday, with sunnier, warmer and drier conditions building beginning Thursday.
“We’ll be lucky to eke out a high of +2 today under a cloudy sky, with a return to sunshine Wednesday and temperatures a little better, pushing up to 5 or so,” he said. “As high pressure returns to the region, and a westerly flow brings warmer air across the southern Prairies, we’ll see lots of sunshine and double digit highs return by the time the final weekend of October gets here. Highs of 11 to 13 are possibly Friday through Sunday, keeping in mind the average is around 8 this time of year.”
