The U18 ‘AAA’ Kenora Thistles fell 5-1 last night to the Winnipeg Thrashers at the Kenora Rec Centre.

Brandon Gustafson, playing in his first game since October 8th, scored the lone marker for the Thistles.

“It felt good being on the ice with the boys. Burying one tonight felt good to get that off of my back and to play some hockey. It’s good to be back,” he said, after the game.

Landon Lowes and Emerson Evans picked up assists. Patrick Forsyth had the loss in net, stopping 17 of the 20 shots he faced in the first 40 minutes. James Sinclair took over in net for the third period, stopping 12 of 14 shots.

Next up for the Thistles is a weekend series with the Norman Northstars. The two teams will face off at the Rec Centre Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

The St. Thomas Aquinas Saints are competing in the OFSAA 'A' Championships representing Northwestern Ontario!

The Saints Senior Boys' Volleyball team is in Sudbury. They won their first OFSAA game this morning in Sudbury against Oakwood Collegiate. The Saints swept the game 2 sets to none. An easy 25-12 in the first, but a tighter second game. They came back to score 5 unanswered points after trailing 22-20.

The Girls' Basketball team is in Walkerton. The Saints are seeded 15th and will compete against 5th seed Roland Michener.

Canada continues to look for its first-ever win at the men's World Cup after dropping a 1-nil decision to Belgium yesterday. The game marked the team's first appearance in the tournament in 36 years.

Canada now needs a victory over No. 12 Croatia on Sunday to avoid elimination from knockout-round contention.
