Environment Canada has issued a Blowing Snow Advisory for the entire Red River Valley and parts of Southeastern Manitoba ahead of a blustery Friday. Communities included are Carman, Morden, Winkler, Altona, Emerson, Morris, Steinbach and Vita. The City of Winnipeg is also under the Advisory.

Gusty northwesterly winds will develop Friday morning and persist into Friday evening. These gusty winds combined with falling snow will lead to significantly reduced visibilities in blowing snow.

Light snow is expected to develop overnight Thursday into Friday morning, with northwesterly winds picking up early Friday morning. Gusts up to 70 km/h are possible. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero.

The gusty winds will also usher in very cold conditions, with the temperature falling throughout the day to about -17 by late Friday afternoon. Wind chill values nearing -30 will be possible.

Blowing snow advisories are issued when winds are expected to create blowing snow giving poor visibility to 800 metres or less for at least 3 hours.

Conditions will improve Friday evening as winds gradually diminish and snow tapers off.
