The Western School Division Board of Trustees is providing money for additional teaching staff.

Chairperson, Brian Fransen, says enrolment continues to grow in the division, noting there are some grades in particular that are experiencing unusually large class sizes. He noted student numbers continued to grow throughout COVID-19, and there are also students returning to the classroom now that the pandemic has dampened. There's also been a lot of immigration coming into the Morden area that has led to a further boost in student enrolment.

"And so, our staff have asked for support," said Fransen.

"It is without question that being able to have good quality time with your teacher has a major impact on student learning, and as class sizes grow, there comes a point where it's very difficult to get that quality one-on-one time. And so, we are trying to make this a little more feasible for those groups."

Currently, the Board is looking to add the extra teachers in grade 4 at Maple Leaf School, and the grade 8 class at Ecole Morden Middle School.

However, with no extra room available for the added classrooms until the new school is built, Fransen says it'll take a creative approach to accommodate them.
