A new leader of the Ontario NDP has been acclaimed after Deputy Leader and Kiiwetinoong MPP, Sol Mamakwa, bowed out last week.

On December 2, Mamakwa announced that he would not be pursuing the role as his top priority is to ‘continue being a voice for Kiiwetinoong and First Nations people across Ontario.’

Then by December 6, the NDP announced that Marit Stiles had been acclaimed into the position as she was the only person to enter the race. The deadline was December 5.

Stiles, Davenport’s MPP and a former Toronto Public School Board trustee, is set to be confirmed as the leader in a vote by party members in the coming days.

If an election race was needed, the party had scheduled it for March 2023.

Long-time NDP leader Andrea Horwath announced her resignation as the leader of the provincial NDP after Election Night 2022. It was her fourth loss as leader of the party since 2009.
