Northwestern Ontario is seeing an over $600,000 boost in funding from the provincial government this year.
The Ontario government has announced $6.6 million in funding to help renew and rehabilitate important infrastructure across the region, part of a $400 million provincial investment throughout 2023. The funding is being provided through Ontario’s Community Infrastructure Fund.
“Our government is proud to support Northern and rural municipalities with stable and predicable funding” explained Kenora – Rainy River MPP, Minister of Indigenous Affairs and Minister of Northern Development, Greg Rickford.
“The combined increase of over $645,000 for Kenora-Rainy River municipalities will help address community infrastructure needs and repair local roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure,” adds Rickford.
The region’s funding is broken down as:
Kenora - $2,055,862
Fort Frances - $1,497,567
Dryden - $1,368,877
Ignace - $290,113
Emo - $156,886
Machin - $145,991
Redditt Local Services Board - $100,000
Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls - $100,000
Chapple, Alberton, Dawson, La Vallee, Lake of the Woods, Morley and Rainy River also received funding.
“Ontario’s small, rural and northern communities, like Kenora-Rainy River are essential to the growth and prosperity of the province,” said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure.
“Our government is continuing to provide stable funding to meet local infrastructure needs and provide support in response to pressures from inflation. By supporting key community infrastructure projects, we are helping to grow and build safer, more resilient communities for generations to come.”
Ontario provided $200 million through the same fund in 2021.
