Fire Chief Readman, Canadian Pacific release details on train accident in Kenora

Tunnel Island walking trail had to be shut down following a train crash.

Chief Redman asked that the public stay away from the site of the accident.

The City of Kenora echoed the Fire Chief's words in social media post Sunday evening saying, "the Tunnel Island walking trails and parking lot is closed until further notice." Read more

Rickford ‘humbled’ after 2022 re-election

Greg Rickford was successful in re-election in the 2022 provincial election.

Rickford dominated local polls with just under 60 per cent of the region’s support, winning the riding with an over 6,000 vote lead by the end of the night. He notes he and his team knocked on the doors of over 17,000 people in the region throughout their campaign. Read more

Crews complete Husky the Muskie makeover

Kenora's Husky the Muskie got a new look. Crews finished the iconic roadside attraction’s rehabilitation project, completed by Alberta’s Dinosaur Valley Studios.

Crews say they’ve lightened the Husky’s green colour to stand out from the trees in the McLeod Park area, have reworked its eyes, and aimed for a more realistic and glossy look.

The Kenora community seemed to be divided on the new look of Husky the Muskie, so we asked Kenora’s City Councillors what they think.

“To put it very succinctly, I like it,” said Councillor Rory McMillan. “I think the refresh was long overdue. It puts a sparkle in the eye of the Muskie. I like it.” Read more

North Star Lodge heroes help save a life in water rescue

Two workers at a local lodge say they will never forget the night when they helped to save the life of one man, before stumbling onto the body of a second man. They were contacted by OPP in regard to a report of a capsized boat on Clay Lake. Their information indicated that two men had been fishing near rapids when their boat capsized.

Guse and Chernosky hopped in a nearby boat and drove 10 miles up the river. That’s when the two lodge workers found one man clinging to the underside of his boat in the middle of the river. Later, the second angler was found deceased. Read more

National Indigenous Peoples Day was a huge success in Kenora

The day was organized by the Kenora Chiefs Advisory (KCA), Grand Council Treaty #3 (GCT3), and the Ne-Chee Friendship Centre at a property on Strecker Road.

There they had events running all day, with a pancake breakfast sponsored by FSET. All-day there were activities running for the whole family, everything from crafts and vendor sales, yoga, face painting and free ice cream. Read more

Two charged after two-year search; Killers, remains still not found

After two years of searching and a 27-month-long investigation by the North West OPP, two men are now facing charges related to the disappearance and suspected murder of 26-year-old Alyssa Turnbull from Nipigon, but her suspected killers remain at large.

Two Nipigon residents are now facing charges of Committing Indignity to a Body, which as described by the Criminal Code of Canada, is to improperly or indecently interfere with or offer any indignity to a dead human body or human remains, whether buried or not. Read more
