A 23-year-old woman is facing several charges, including assaulting a police officer, after an alleged stabbing in the city's West End.
The Winnipeg Police Service says they were called about the stabbing around 5:15 p.m. on New Year's Eve. The incident took place at a residence in the 500 block of Maryland Street for the report of a stabbing.
Officers were assisted by members of the Tactical Support Team (TST). TST members located a 27-year-old victim suffering from an upper-body stab wound and provided emergency medical care with the application of a chest seal. She was transported to hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery.
Officers located a female suspect and placed her under arrest. During the arrest, the suspect physically assaulted one of the officers. The officer was uninjured as a result of the assault.
The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned the suspect attended the victim’s residence and engaged in a verbal dispute. The dispute escalated with the suspect stabbing the victim, causing an injury to the upper body.
The suspect and victim are previously known to one another as acquaintances.
A 23-year-old female from Winnipeg is charged with the following offences:
- Aggravated Assault
- Assault a Peace Officer
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Undertaking
She was detained in custody.
