The Weyburn Beavers will have a new face on the bench when the 2023 Western Canadian Baseball League season opens.

Cam Williams, who is the head coach of the University of Calgary Dinos baseball team, will be taking the reins for the upcoming year, replacing outgoing head coach Dusty Kearns.

“I had been chatting with Phil Curtis, the former head coach, a little bit, and you know, when he asked, it was a pretty instant yes,” Williams told Discover Weyburn.

Williams is a familiar face in Weyburn and has earned his place in the record books. After spending four seasons as a player with the Beavers, from 2015 to 2018, he is in the top three of the majority of the offensive records in team history.

“I was back for a couple weeks at the start of the season last year, and it was pretty cool to see some of the locals kind of remember me,” Williams added.

His time with the Dinos has been stellar as well. After playing for four years with that collegiate program, he took over the head coach role there as well. In his first full season as the head coach coming out of the pandemic, he guided the Dinos to a record of 18-17, which was the first winning record in team history.

With the upcoming season, he is looking forward to having fun, and also bringing back a winning tradition to Tom Laing Park.

“I loved my time in Weyburn, and I am super excited to get back there in a coaching role and try to get back to the winning ways.”

The Beavers open the WCBL season on May 25th, when they host the Regina Red Sox at Tom Laing Park.
