With heavy hearts we share the sudden departure of our dearly beloved father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather. George Boyd was 71 years old, a member of Wabaseemoong First Nation, who started his spirit journey on Tuesday, December 26, 2022.
George was a proud member of the Atik (Caribou) Clan, and was predeceased by his wife, Doris Hunter and his first wife Lucy Muckle, along with his loving parents, Harriet Cameron (nee Boyd) and Norbert Cameron, and Maurice Thomas Godin, his siblings Norbert Jr., Frankie, Brian, Teddy, Ernie Cameron, his aunts and uncles; Cecile (Godin) Morrisseau, Charlotte (Lottie) Godin, Robert (Bobbie) Godin, Thomas, Larry and John Robert Boyd, Robert, Alex and Ernie Godin; His children, Norris, Russell, his grandparents Zephrine and Agnes Godin, his grandparents: Simon & Sarah (nee: Mandamin) Boyd, and Zaphrine and Agnes Godin. His cousins, Wayne Morrisseau, Lisa Morrisseau, Matthew Davis, Jodie Tucker and his son-in-laws, Christopher McDonald, Jason Scott, and nephew Lanny Mandamin.
George is survived by his children: Harriet, Matthew, George, Myra (Wayne), Isaac, Valerie, Barney (Anne), Harvey (Linda), Wendy (John Paul), Gretchen (Rocky), Michael (Jennifer), and Kyra Jolie their granddaughter whom he and Doris raised lovingly together. His siblings: Teresa Tikanye, Loretta, Rose (Curtis), Ricky (Caroline), Glenn (Jacqueline), David Cameron, Priscilla (George) Simard of Fort Frances, Valerie Norris, Calvin (Mona Rose) Morriseau, Roberta (Dennis) Bruyere, Arlene Tucker all of Couchiching, Alvin Morrisseau of Regina, Saskatchewan, Michael Morrisseau, Lelsie Morrisseau of Couchiching, Roberta Godin of Winnipeg, Manitoba and was close to Tyson Skylar Morrisseau. Close cousins; Ray, Roger, Stanley, Richard, Debbie, Cory, Colleen, Oliver, Clarence and many other cousins too numerous to mention. Nieces and Nephews: Brenna, Judy, Cory, Linda, Reggie, Joseph, Anneke, Robert (Rheanna), Caleb, Jonah (Eleanor), Vestal, Greg, Rebecca (Darren), Chris (Clara), Catherine (Glen), Dale, Ellen, Monique, Shannon, Tylis, Gerilyn (Mitchell), Glen, and Starleen (Jenny); His precious grandchildren: Christina, Chelsea, Jodie, Christopher (Selena), Charity, Marcie, Lucinda, Kylie, Regan, Jaden, Angel, Christina, Jason, Regan, Ryus, Reeve, Lucinda, Kylie, Maggie, Jaymee, Brave, Prince, Chantelle, Dylana, Dorissa, Dylan, Clayton, Stacy, Shawna, Jade, Chloe, Storm, Terry Melissa), Rocky Jr. (Pricilla), Roxanne (Dennis), Kyle (Lindsey), Rochelle (Curt), Rocki (Steven), Melissa, Brittney and Stanley, he will also be greatly missed by his fishing partner Agnes MacDonald, as well as many great grandchildren that were special to him.
He was a trapper, hunter, fisherman, storyteller and a spiritual advisor/elder. George, aka “Jo-chanse” had a wealth of knowledge about how families helped each other to survive, and how they migrated throughout the land and water in the olden days. He shared many stories of where families picked wild rice together, and how whole families would relocate to their hunting and trapping grounds seasonally. George was inseparable to the land where he grew up and he was no stranger to the lakes. He loved sharing his catch with his family. He gathered plants and herbs for medicine-use. He worked as a guide for the KCR, Tetu and Caribou Camps, and he enjoyed sharing his knowledge and skills with his children. George worked on building houses in the community, and as a result of his love of nature and carpentry, he worked with Allan McDonald to build cabins for the Youth Camp. The camp was his favourite place to be. George would make sure the camp was ready for use for the youth. He would greet the youth at the dock and he also bid them farewell. He loved to camp and his love for the land he cultivated in his children and siblings.
George will forever be missed and his spirit will be remembered and felt. The joy he bestowed to his family to love and respect the land will continue to remain. The memories of him steering his boat against the waves across the many lakes will not be forgotten. We submit George to the spirit to the Creator and that he be guided as he begins his spiritual journey. We love you forever!
Pallbearers and Honorary pallbearers will be friends and family.
All attendees must follow COVID protocols like wearing masks during the wake and the funeral.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew and cherished him. The Traditional Funeral Ceremony will be conducted by Mide'kiwenzie of Ki'eshgitabaaning and his helpers. The wake will start on Saturday, December 31 at 3:00pm, with a traditional ceremony to be held at the Mizhakiiwetung Memorial School Gymnasium at Wabaseemoong on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 beginning at 10:00am. A post celebration will be arranged to release him to his spiritual ancestors in the summer.
