The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings took to the road Tuesday night for a game against the Notre Dame Hounds. The neutral site game in Radville felt more like a home game for the Wings, with a number of Weyburn faithful in the stands. It would be the actual home team though, the Hounds, who came away with the win, skating to a 6-3 victory after rallying from a 3-1 deficit.
Weyburn jumped out to the lead in the game just 7:35 into the first period when Jakob Kalin scored his 12th of the campaign. He was assisted on the goal by Matthew Reidy. Then, 34 seconds later, Ty Mason notched his 14th goal of the year on the power play. He was assisted on the goal by Kalin and Jordan Edwards.
The Hounds replied with a power play goal of their own with 8:14 remaining in the first, as Will Dawson managed to get the puck past Red Wings netminder Dazza Mitchell.
Before the end of the period, though, Weyburn extended the lead back to two goals as Kalin scored his second of the night. He was assisted on the goal by Ryley Morgan and Jackson Hassman.
In the second period, the Hounds came out strong, and would close the gap just 3:28 into the frame. Former Red Wing Matteo Speranza scored his second of the year. Then, at the 6:07 mark, Isaiah Peters tied the game up with his second of the season.
In the third period, the Hounds would take the lead late in the game. Rocsyn Bird would score with 5:22 left on the clock to make it 4-3 for the Hounds. Then, two empty net goals 12 seconds apart – one from Evan Vanden Heuvel and one from Dane Probe – would make it a 6-3 final.
Mitchell would be tested often in the game, facing 48 shots, and turning aside 44.
The win put the Hounds ahead of the Wings in the standings, moving up to the eighth and final playoff spot. Weyburn is in 9th, one point back.
The Red Wings will be back in action on Friday, when they host the Battlefords North Stars at Crescent Point Place. The Stars will be coming into their road trip to the southeast, which includes a game against the Hounds Thursday night, having been undefeated in the regular season.
