The Estevan Police Service believe that a supply of fentanyl in town may be present, with “high potency.”
City police issued a public-safety advisory Friday afternoon to alert the public of the drug’s likely presence.
“Fentanyl and related compounds are a serious danger to public safety,” said the advisory. “These substances can come in several colours and forms, including powder, blotter paper, tablets and spray. Fentanyl can look similar to cocaine and crystal meth and may be mixed into these illicit drugs. These substances can be absorbed through the skin or accidentally inhaled if airborne powder.
EPS Sgt. Evan Handley said the advisory followed a medical incident, but was unable to share more details.
“Fentanyl effects can work very quickly, so in cases of suspected exposure, it is important to call EMS immediately and seek medical help," said the advisory.
“The Estevan Police Service is advising the public not to consume illegal street drugs. If anyone locates a suspicious substance, do not touch or handle it in anyway and contact police immediately.
“Anyone with information about the presence of fentanyl or other illicit drugs in Estevan is asked to contact Estevan Police at 306-634-4767 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-tips.”
