On January 11, at approximately 10:05 am, Russell RCMP received a report from INTERPOL that an online social media account, associated to a resident of Russell, had uttered threatening comments via various social media platforms towards law enforcement personnel, government officials and medical professionals.
An investigation was conducted to determine the identity of the account holder and from where the threats originated.
On January 12, after having identified the suspect and knowing his violent history with police encounters, officers contacted an adult at his residence and attempted to have the accused turn himself in. When this effort failed, officers attended to the home, located on Memorial Avenue South in Russell, to make an arrest.
Officers knocked on the door to which a 42-year-old male answered and when he was advised that he was under arrest for Uttering Threats, he immediately became combative and resisted being taken into custody.
RCMP say the suspect, who fought with officers, was physically brought under control, but not before one of the suspect’s dogs attempted to intervene by biting one of the officers on the leg. The officer suffered only a superficial injury before the dogs could be contained.
The 42-year-old man from Russell was remanded into custody for a court appearance scheduled January 16, 2023, in Brandon where he will face charges of Uttering Threats, Resisting Arrest and Assaulting a Police Officer x4.
Russell RCMP continue to investigate.
