Students throughout the region will be focusing on their reading and writing skills this week as educators across the province celebrate Literacy Week.

Events are being planned at each school with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board.

Literacy Support Teacher at Dryden’s Open Roads Public School, Karen Kudlacek, explains the week is a great way to remind students about the importance of literacy in the real world.

“Literacy Week is another opportunity for us to highlight how important literacy skills are. Reading and writing are essential skills to be able to do anything in our society. We really like to highlight that with our students and families.”

At Open Roads, Kudlacek explains students began the week with a Spirit Day where they could bring in their favourite books to read with fellow students.

Then on Wednesday, Open Roads will be hosting Family Literacy Night between 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. which is open to students and their families and will include crafts, reading activities, snacks and visits from community partners.

By Friday, students will be taking part in a Stop, Drop and Read event where everyone in the school will stop what they’re doing and begin reading for about 30 minutes, and members of the Dryden Firefighters will be reading to students in the afternoon.

Family Literacy Day takes place every January 27 to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. The initiative began in 1999.
