The SJHL/MJHL Showcase wrapped up Wednesday evening, and as it was during the first three years of the event, the teams representing the SJHL came away with the majority of the wins. The three teams from the SJHL won four of the six contests, including a 6-0 rout for Team Gold in their second game of the weekend, and an 8-2 win for Team Blue in the final game of the showcase.
The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings sent two players to the event – forward Ryley Morgan who skated with Team Gold, and Ty Mason, who played with Team Blue.
Morgan finished the showcase with a goal and an assist, including scoring the first goal of the showcase Tuesday afternoon.
“It was awesome,” Morgan said of the experience at the Showcase. “Obviously everything is pretty professional here, and we’re treated well. The guys on our team were awesome and just had a blast.”
Team Gold won their first game of the tournament 4-1, and then came out with the 6-0 rout Wednesday. When asked about how he thought of his play during the two games, Morgan spoke highly of his linemates from the event.
“It’s obviously pretty easy when you’re playing with two good guys like (Jaxon) Martens and (Steven) Kesslering in there,” Morgan added.
Mason skated with Team Blue, which was comprised of players from the SJHL who were 18 and under.
While he didn’t pick up a point in the first game of the event, which was a 5-4 victory for the SJHL, he made his presence felt in the second game. He would score a goal, and added an assist in the third period as his team rolled over the MJHL 8-2.
Since the first SJHL/MJHL Showcase held in Regina in 2018, the SJHL has posted a combined record of 15-8-0-1, including the 4-2-0-0 record this year. They have scored 91 goals over the span of the four showcases, including 25 this year.
The next SJHL/MJHL Showcase is tentatively scheduled now for January of 2024, to once again be held in Winnipeg.
