The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings got back into the win column Saturday night, ending their four-game losing skid. They would pick up a 3-2 win in overtime over the Kindersley Klippers.

With the win, the Red Wings moved slightly ahead of the Notre Dame Hounds, expanding the difference to seven points. The Wings also closed in slightly on the Nipawin Hawks, who are in seventh place with 55 points. Weyburn is currently holding down 8th place with 51 points and a game in hand.

Special teams would be the theme in the first period, as both teams scored on the power play. Kindersley would be the first to get on the board as Logan Linklater put the puck past Dazza Mitchell with 9:02 left to go in the frame. Weyburn would reply less than five minutes later, though.

Ryley Morgan notched his 24th of the season, assisted by Jackson Hassman and Ty Mason, with 5:31 left on the clock. The goal, scored on the power play, would even things up 1-1 after 20 minutes.

In the second period, neither team was able to score, despite a number of chances both ways. Both goaltenders, Weyburn’s Mitchell and Kindersley’s Cody Jaman turned aside 13 shots each, and things went into the third period still even at 1-1.

Weyburn would take the lead just under six minutes into the third, as Braigh LeGrandeur scored his 3rd of the campaign. He was assisted on the even-strength goal by Elijah Anderson and Blake Betson.

The 2-1 lead would hold until there were just 38 seconds left to play in the third. With their net empty and an extra attacker on the ice, Linklater scored his second of the game for the Klippers to force overtime.

It wouldn’t take long in the extra period, though, for the Wings to secure the win. Just 39 seconds in, Blake Norris scored his 3rd of the year. The unassisted goal would secure the win for the Red Wings.

The Red Wings now have a magic number of four to secure a playoff spot, and will look to get closer to that with their second game in as many days against the Klippers Sunday afternoon.
