For the first time in four years, Unspoken is releasing a new five-song EP inspired by the book of Psalms in the Bible.
On April 7, the Christian group released God Help Me, which features five songs, including the title track which has been viewed from that 878,000 times on YouTube alone.
The project was written by lead vocalist Chad Mattson, bassist Jon Lowry and GRAMMY-nominated songwriter Jeff Pardo.
The Connections podcast: real life, real faith
God Help Me is inspired by Pslam 18:6, "In my distress, I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears." (NIV)
"'God Help Me' is about those desperate moments in life where all we can do is cry out to God," says Mattson. "We've been there, so many times. Prayer changes things because God loves us and hears our cries. If you're in a place of desperation, or know someone who is, we hope this song encourages you. We are praying that the Lord impacts you and the people in your lives through 'God Help Me' in powerful ways."
On Unspoken's Facebook page, they share several posts regarding the inspiration for the EP and other fun facts. For example, in the title track music video, Chad wears a custom-made multicoloured coat as a nod to the Biblical story of Joseph because he was "a man who would have known a prayer like this intimately throughout his life."
The full God Help Me EP includes the following songs:
- God Help Me
- Hard Times
- Loved By You
- Love is Everything We Need
- More Church Than Church (ft. Walker Haynes)
"With this record, we want to encourage the body to live what the Word of God says, to believe what it says and to stand up for what it says," says Mattson. "The whole goal is to encourage each other in the faith."
The new EP follows 2019’s acclaimed, bestselling album Reason, which sparked several radio hits, including the multiformat No. 1 title track and Top 20 singles “You’ve Always Been” and “Just Give Me Jesus.”
