Walter and Bernice (née Schriml) Chantler
It is with the deepest of sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of our father, Walter Chantler on December 28, 2022, at the age of 94 and our mother, Bernice (Schriml) Chantler on April 12, 2023 at the age of 89. The family has been blessed with such wonderful parents who were married for over 69 years before their passings. Walter was born on August 12, 1928, on the family farm in the Peterson District, Saskatchewan. He grew up there and took over the operation of the farm at the time of his marriage to Bernice Schriml on November 11, 1953. Bernice Schriml was born on February 19, 1934, in Bruno, SK, where she grew up and was then employed at the Royal Bank of Canada until her marriage to Walter. They were both very active in the Peterson District and surrounding communities until they retired to Humboldt, SK in January of 2004. Both enjoyed their retirements, playing cards, bowling, golfing, coffee times, and their annual New Year’s Eve gatherings with the Peterson gang. Walter’s wisdom will be missed and his family is so grateful for all the years of being able to seek his advice. Bernice too, was a very special person in her families lives as she taught many lessons to them; lessons they will be living by for the rest of their lives. They will be lovingly remembered by their children: Owen (Rena), Barry, Dale, and Lyle (Colette); four grandchildren: Derek, Leah (Wes), Benjamin (Casey) and Shelly (Binh); three great grandchildren: Kennedi (Jason), William and Julia. Walter was survived by: one sister Mildred (Hermant) Lesser; and sister-in-law, Hazel (Ashleyt) Chantler. He was predeceased by: his parents, Ashley and Margaret (née Boak) Chantler; four sisters and their spouses: Margaret (Peter) Herbach, Dorothy (George) Herr, Viola (Ed) Matlock, Isabelle (Orville) Frederick; and one brother, Ashley Chantler. Bernice was survived by: four sisters, Verna (Jeromet) Witt, Arlene (Vernt) Tarnowski, Linda (Dale) Howse and Collene Finkbeiner. She was predeceased by her husband Walter; her parents, John and Annie (née Just) Schriml; one sister, Elaine (Michael) Marshak. They are both also survived by many extended relatives and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at The Elizabeth Retirement Community, Humboldt District Hospital, and St. Mary’s Villa for the excellent care and compassion shown to both parents. The Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 21, 2023, at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, SK, celebrated by Fr. Colin Roy. Others taking part were: Ron Basset, cross bearer; Leah Boden and Patricia Nimchuk, scripture readers; Mervin and Annette Collin, gift bearers; Shauna McGilliky, prayers of the faithful; and Benjamin Chantler and Shelly Chantler, urn bearers.
