The RM of Stanley should be okay in terms of overland flooding if a normal amount of rain falls over the municipality in the midst of the ongoing spring melt. A Colorado Low tracking into the region has the potential to drop a significant amount of precipitation over the next few days.
In a statement emailed to PembinaValleyOnline News, CAO Dale Toews says, at this point, Stanley drains are clear and should be able to handle normal rainfall.
For the most part, Toews says the RM has faired okay so far through the current spring melt.
There have been a few areas where snow blocking the usual drainage path is causing the water to move into other drainage basins and overwhelm those systems.
A number of crossings in the RM are undermined and washed over, which will need some significant work. Toews noted crews have been out patching up roads and are now trying to get the roads worked and back in shape.
Water has been draining into the ground in multiple places indicating the frost is gone. Roads are also starting to soften in places due to deeper frost in the roadways. Toews says that highlights a reason why the spring road restrictions are helpful.
