Portage Pairs and Squares has been around for seven decades in the city and they're ready to celebrate this weekend.

The group known for square dancing and round dancing will be getting together at the Herman Prior Activity Centre for a small jamboree from 2 to 5 p.m.

Joanne Tait is a member of the group and calls this a fun way to make friends while staying active.

"Our little club is down to 16 people and they come from Neepawa, Gladstone, Hamiota, Douglas, Winnipeg, Starbuck," says Tait. "Our club is that small now, but we continue to go, and 70 years is a very long time for any club to be alive."

Tait says the group used to have more members when they first started. Now, they hope to get more people in, to hopefully get numbers back up. During COVID, some members took a step back.

"We're having a dance and a cold meal. We'll be doing square and round dancing," says Tait. "We're doing something a little different. We're having a 50/50 and we're having door prizes. There will be a really good display of pictures in albums that have been kept up to date by Edith Furdievich. She's a really good scrapbook person."

If you are interested, you can go watch for free. If you wish to take part in the whole evening, it's only $15 per person. You do not need a partner -- many people go alone. Tait says there will always be someone to dance with and everyone is invited.
