Leo Raymond Fleischhacker
March 9, 1929 - April 28, 2023

Leo was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, on March 9, 1929, to Fred and Margaret (née Poppel) Fleischhacker. He was the sixth out of 11 children. Leo was raised on the family farm east of Pilger, SK, and attended St. Bernard’s rural school from grades one through eight. He began farming at an early age with his brother Roman in the summer months and he worked at the bush camps in Ontario in the winter months. In 1951 he met Peggy Kinsella while working near London, Ontario. They were married on October 31, 1953, in London, ON. The following spring, they returned to Saskatchewan to establish their own mixed farm seven miles east of Pilger, SK. Life was busy as they raised their six children. They moved to Humboldt in 1992 when Bob took over the family farm, but Leo continued to be Bob’s helper for some years as he slowly got used to living away from the farm. Although he was retired from farming, Leo continued to work with his brother Martin at Futuristic Industries, as well as other building projects together. Leo was a plumber, electrician, home builder, carpenter, mechanic, welder, he could fix and repair anything. He curled in the winter months well into his 80’s and was a Humboldt Bronco season ticket holder for many years. He took a memorable cruise to Alaska, traveled to the Bahamas, Florida and one trip to Arizona in 2013 before he let his passport expire.

His hobbies and interests were many but top of the list was playing cards and fishing. The card games of Kaiser and Solo that went long into the night with his brothers and sisters were some of his most cherished times. He was an excellent fisherman and “the boys” took him on two wonderful trips up to northern Saskatchewan, but there were also many days spent fishing on the local lakes. Leo enjoyed gardening, and his family will miss his potato and carrot crops. He was already preparing the garden for this spring! He was an avid reader and enjoyed watching curling, the Blue Jays and Judge Judy!

Family gatherings were incredibly special to him, and nothing made him happier than when his family was together. Leo was a man of deep religious faith and attended Sunday Mass always, even if it was on the TV in his home. He always made time for anyone who visited or phoned him and helped anyone who reached out to him. He was a kindhearted, humble, soft-spoken man and a true example of goodness that we will do our best to live up to as his family. We were truly blessed to call him our husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa.

Leo is lovingly remembered and sadly missed by: his wife of 69 years Peggy; his 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren:

Rick (+2013),

Sadly, Leo was predeceased by his son Rick (+2013), which was a very difficult time for him; his parents Fred (1978) and Margaret (1982); four brothers: Emil, Martin, Roman and Peter; one sister Emma Lang; two sisters-in-law Bernadine Fleischhacker, and Ange Fleischhacker; and three brothers-in-law: Carl Lang, Francis Ehalt and Art Hamp. The Funeral Mass for Leo was offered on Friday, May 5, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, and Fr. John Ezeoruonye was the celebrant. Others taking part were Larry Fleischhacker, cross bearer; Leah Hayward and Tiana Hauser, scripture readers; Jody Wolos, intentions; Bonnie and McKena Fleischhacker, gift bearers; and Ruth Sarauer and Patricia Ehalt, memorial table attendants. Music ministry was provided by the St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir, directed by Loretta Schugmann and accompanied by pianist Carol Esler. Interment followed in the St. Augustine Roman Catholic Cemetery in Humboldt with active pallbearers: Dillon Fleischhacker, Brady Fleischhacker, Erik Fleischhacker, Geoff Ramler, Jordan Ramler, and Riley Hauser, and the memorial luncheon was held afterwards in the St. Augustine Parish Hall.
