The Weyburn Beavers split their games on the weekend, picking up a win over the rival Regina Red Sox Saturday afternoon, before dropping a game against the Moose Jaw Miller Express Sunday.

The game Saturday was bolstered by having the guest from Friday night’s sports dinner in attendance. Former Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons threw out the first pitch for the game and watched from the deck above the home team dugout. He saw the Beavers take an early lead and hold off the Red Sox for a 6-2 win.

Robert Gurney led the way at the plate for the Beavers, with a pair of RBIs. Also driving in runs were Ryan Dauphinee, Trent Lawson, Brett Potter and Brayden Murua. Murua and Lawson also had doubles in the win, with Jared Hall and Ryan Muizelaar stealing bases.

On the mound, Owen McConnell threw seven innings, striking out four while allowing two runs on nine hits. His efforts would earn him the win. He would be relieved by Jacob Clark who struck out two and walked one in 1 1/3 innings. Brett Paterson finished the game off, striking out one in 2/3 of an inning.

Sunday, the Beavers travelled to Moose Jaw for a game at Ross Wells Park against the Miller Express. This time, the bats wouldn’t be able to work as well as they did Saturday, with the Beavers striking out 15 times in an 8-2 loss.

Triston Madison and Murua would play a role in driving in the runs for the Beavers, with Madison bringing a runner in with a single in the fourth, and a single from Murua helping get Madison across the plate in the seventh.

On the mound, Jack Kovanen would get tagged with the loss, giving up four runs in 5 2/3 innings. Cole McGregor pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief with three earned runs credited to him. Paterson would finish the game off, giving up one run.

The Beavers will look to bounce back against the Miller Express Tuesday night when they host Moose Jaw at Tom Laing Park.
