Bernard Frederick Blaine
Peacefully, on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at the Portage District General Hospital, Bernard Blaine passed away at the age of 86 with his daughter Sharon by his side, along with very special friend Edith Berard and his homecare worker Kathryn Woodward.
Bernard was born on July 13, 1936, in Austin, MB, the youngest of four children born to Albert and Mabel (Asplund) Blaine.
He grew up and received his education in Austin and earned an award of Honors in Grade 6 in 1948. After finishing grade 12, he travelled to the West Coast for work, but came back to Manitoba, and in 1954 started work with Manitoba Hydro, retiring in 1992.
He enjoyed watching all sports on TV, especially hockey, football and baseball.
Bernard married Joan Painter in Lavenham, MB in 1958. In 1961 daughter Beverley was born and in 1963 daughter Sharon was born. He resided in Portage la Prairie his entire life.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter Sharon (Brad) Scora, grandsons Derryk, Blake, Devon (Breanna), Mitchell (Janel) and newly born great grandson Waylon, sisters-in-law Georgina Rintoul, Pattie Walsh, Orlia Painter and brother-in-law Abe Schroeder.
Predeceasing him are daughter Beverley in 1973, wife Joan in 2009, brother Ralph (Francis), sisters Noreen (Bill) Ritzer, Norma Schroeder, brothers and sisters-in-law Ron (Leona) Painter, Helen (Ted) Gmitrowski, Lorne Painter, Tom Painter and Eldon Rintoul.
A private graveside service will be held at Hillside Cemetery.
If friends so desire, donations may be made in memory of Bernard to Autism Society Manitoba, 825 Sherbrook, Winnipeg, MB, R3A 1M5 or to Cystic Fibrosis Canada Prairies Region, Box 3088, 309 4th Ave. N, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, S7K 3S9.
A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.
