Albert Monchuk
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our Dad, Albert Monchuk. He passed away peacefully on Monday evening, April 17, surrounded by immediate family, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. He was 85. He was the kindest, most generous, hardest working man, with the patience of a saint. A farm boy from Saskatchewan, he worked with the railways for a bit before starting his teaching career which would take him up North for the next “50 odd” years. Dementia robbed us of the last few years of our Dad, with some occasional glimpses of the true him every now and then. We will never forget his infectious smile, calloused hands, willingness to lend a hand, strong work ethic, and the love he had for his family, friends, and community. He will be forever in our hearts and memories. Rest well, Dad….you have more than earned it!
Al is now reunited with his parents, his brothers Mike, Wilmer and Larry, and his sister Mary. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marisa, his two children, David (Heather) and Andrea (Darrel) Dyvig, his grandchildren Georgia and Jackson, his brother Fred (Anne), his sister Betty (Florian) Possberg and many nieces and nephews and close family friends.
Al called Fort Smith, NWT “home” for the past 50 years, and leaves behind a proud legacy as a fondly remembered and well-loved teacher, and a pillar of the small community. May he now rest peacefully.
Prayer of a Teacher
(This was found on a yellowed, worn piece of paper, tucked in his wallet)
Most loving Father, you have given me these children to teach and
prepare for everlasting life. Help me with your Grace to carry out this
most sacred trust.
Give me light that I may know how to guide them in the path of truth.
Give me wisdom that I may know when to reprove and when to praise.
Give me strength that I may know how to be gentle and yet firm.
Give me faith that I may not be discouraged in the face of failure.
Grant that I may be able to lead them to You.
Father, by word and example, through Jesus Christ our Lord, and in"
the unity if the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
