Downtown Portage la Prairie received countless makeovers for holidays that have come and gone during the winter and spring, thanks to the Holiday Avenue Project.

Bonnie Houle is a member of the group and says they were happy with how things were worked out this year.

"Our main aim at the beginning was to do the winter scenes, and that's how it got started, so we're very happy with the way things turned out this year. We are very excited with the new wreaths that were put on the new lampposts along downtown Saskatchewan Ave."

Houle notes that the group is hoping to continue to grow when the different seasons come along that require Portage to dress up.

"For next year, we're concentrating more on that core downtown area. As the city expands, and keeps doing all their renovations that are going to be absolutely beautiful on the avenue, we can go block by block and expand as we go and as they open up."

While the group may be finished decorating the city with holiday themes for the next couple months, Houle adds that they will be doing a garden tour on July 22nd with Communities in Bloom, where Portagers could see eight gardens for $25 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

"We just want to make Portage a prettier place to drive through and, for those of us living here, just something to admire as we're driving down the street," notes Houle.
