This morning, 123 grade twelve students at Winkler’s Northlands Parkway Collegiate will graduate from their secondary education as the Class of 2023.

Class valedictorian Olivia Groening says the defining characteristic of her class is resilience.

"We went through many ups and downs together, especially in our high school years, and our grade is one that can quickly adapt and make the best of a not-so-great situation. The Class of '23 is also incredibly connected and very supportive. For example, you could always catch a large group of the grade sharing around each other during events or games, and our class seems to have the desire to see others succeed."

Through all that these students went through together, Groening says they've been brought very close.

"The Class of '23 is a unique class that has an incredible group of people and I truly believe that no matter where everyone's paths are heading, we will always support one another, whether it is in person or even through a screen."

Today's ceremonies bring a mix of emotion said Groening.

"There's so much excitement and anticipation for the next steps of life, while still grieving the routine and familiar faces that you have to say goodbye to."

With plans to attend the University of Manitoba to complete her undergrad degree in sciences with the aim of pursuing medicine, Groening looks back on the past 13 years.

"I personally feel that the most memorable part of my years of school has been the people. Friends and classmates are the ones who were there through it all.
Of course, lack of sleep and loads of homework might not be the happiest memories. But now that we're graduating it all feels worth it."

Groening says all graduating students leave a legacy of memories created with one another, personal character, and the treatment of others.

The valedictorian says many in the class will move on to post-secondary studies.
