The Weyburn Beavers wrapped up their Alberta road swing in Brooks Tuesday night, finishing off six games in six days. The last game of the trip, though, will be one the players will be looking to shake off when they get back on the field at Tom Laing Park Wednesday.
The trip started out in Okotoks last Thursday. The Dawgs would jump out into the early lead, but Weyburn would battle back, ultimately coming up short in a 10-7 loss. At the plate, Trent Lawson and Ryan McCarthy each had a double and Robert Gurney hit his first home run of the season. Owen McConnell would get tagged with the loss, as the Beavers pitchers combined for seven strikeouts, with ten of the runs scored against being earned.
Friday night, the two teams met again in Seaman Stadium in Okotoks. This time, the Dawgs came out with something to prove after almost letting the game slip away the night before. Eight runs in the 4th inning and 10 in the 8th lifted the home side to a 22-5 victory. Jared Hall would have a double and drive in two runs for the Beavers in the loss, with Tyren Dorrance and Ryan Muizelaar also chipping in RBIs.
Saturday the Beavers continued their trip with a visit to Spitz Stadium for the first of two games against the Lethbridge Bulls. The Bulls would rally back, scoring five runs in the final two innings to walk off the Beavers 10-9.
The Beavers were powered by a three RBI performance from Dorrance with Triston Madison adding two more thanks to his first home run of the season. Also driving in runs were Lawson, Muizelaar, Hall and Deri Steiert-Couture. On the mound, the Beavers got strong performances from Cole McGregor and Liam McAusland, before the Bulls got to a usually unshakeable Jamin Smith in the 8th, taking four runs to tie the game, which allowed for the walk-off in the 9th.
The next night, the Beavers were looking to get the win back, and thanks to 11 hits, including doubles from Lawson and Jaxsen Davis, the Beavers were able to come away with a 5-2 victory. Lawson added his 15th RBI of the season, with Gurney also driving in a run. On the mound, Jack Kovanen went six innings, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out three. Brett Paterson finished the game off, striking out two over three innings of work to pick up the win.
The last two games of the trip were in Brooks against the Bombers, a team notorious for putting up a lot of runs at home thanks to the park they play in. The games Monday and Tuesday nights would be no exception. Monday, the Bombers would rely on their pitching, striking out 13 batters, while picking up a 13-4 victory over the Beavers. Tuesday night, it would be much the same. The Brooks pitching staff would strike out 10 as they went on to a 17-2 win over the Beavers.
After nearly a week away from home, the Beavers will be looking to get back into the win column Wednesday night as they host the Medicine Hat Mavericks at Tom Laing Park. The game starts at 7:05 p.m.
