Standing in the middle of Altona's Main Street, town mayor Harv Schroeder, and Borderland MLA Josh Guenter cut the ribbon to mark the completion of the much-anticipated re-surfacing project.

"I took the first ride out on my e-bike and what a wonderful street," said Schroeder. "Just want to thank the Manitoba Government for putting the funds in and getting this job done. It's been many years in the works. It's been many councillors and mayors [that have] advocated for this. We just seemed to be able to make it work this time around and we're just thankful for that."

Crews completed the highly anticipated project from Centre Avenue to 6th Avenue in early June. All that's left is some final landscaping.

The total bill came to $350,000, most of which was taken on by the province.

"Budget-wise, we had a few dollars that we needed to put in at the beginning," noted Schroeder, "But yeah. They've come through for us."

In his comments, Guenter said it's an exciting day for the town.

"It's no secret it's taken us some time to get here today, but nevertheless very pleased for the community of Altona and very happy that our provincial government came to the table with a $350,000 commitment to get this road done. And I especially want to thank the Altona Council and administration, under the leadership of Mayor Harv Schroeder, who has been diligent in supporting this project in any way they can as well. It's been a great partnership. This is what we do. It's about collaboration, about getting things done for the benefit of our communities."

Schroeder says the town will now advocate for the revamping of Centre Avenue.
