Bison producers from around the province gathered in Tisdale over the weekend for their Annual Field Day.
Avery Shepherd, chair of the Saskatchewan Bison Association says the Bison industry in the province is a strong but growing sector.
The event brought producers together to discuss a variety of topics, network, and learn about some of the work and research being done in the industry.
He says bison is a nutritious meat that is fairly sought after.
"Traditionally the markets have been mainly overseas and restaurants. With COVID that's been changing, we're seeing more bison meat available in stores like Costco and Sobey's and stuff like that now."
He says some of the research being done is looking at forage options for bison.
Like other livestock over the last few years, the dry and in many areas drought conditions have been a concern for producers however, bison seem to manage fairly well.
However, he notes producers have to be very good land managers, especially in dry conditions.
"We're just as susceptible as the beef industry and maybe more so. Our managers need to be really cautious of the grass we have in front of us because we don't have the ability to move our animals around. You can't just throw a cow-calf bison pair in a trailer and haul them up the road 60 miles to greener pasture. you got to be thinking ahead."
