The Weyburn Beavers wrapped up a two-game set against the Medicine Hat Mavericks Thursday night. They were looking to make a victorious return home at Tom Laing Park after their Alberta road swing. However, the Mavericks had other plans in mind and would take both games.

Wednesday night, Medicine Hat batted around the order in the third inning, and again in the seventh en route to an 11-3 win. The pitching of the Mavericks kept the Beavers dammed up, striking out 11 over the course of the game.

Luke Zimmer would get the loss on the mound, giving up nine runs, eight earned, on 13 hits while striking out two over the course of 6 1/3 innings. Jamin Smith would strike three in 1 2/3 innings of work while giving up one run, with Brett Paterson closing the game out allowing one run as well.

At the plate, Robert Gurney led the way with three hits. Ryan Dauphinee added two hits himself, with Triston Madison, Cale Yuzdepski and Jaxson Davis also recording hits in the game. Davis also drove in two of the three runs.

Thursday night would be a completely different game, with the two teams in a 1-1 tie until the eighth inning, then entered the 9th with the game knotted up 2-2. The Mavericks, though, would get one run across in the final inning, finishing up with a 3-2 victory.

At the plate, the Beavers were again led by Gurney, who went 3-for-3 at the dish. He is now 9-for-13 in his last four games and is leading the team with a batting average of .314. Dauphinee, Trent Lawson and Madison also collected hits in the game.

On the mound, Ethan Webster would go 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits and striking out four. In relief, Angel Rios pitched 2/3 of an inning, striking out one and allowing a hit. Jacob Clark finished off the game, giving up one run on two hits, while striking out one in a full inning.

The Beavers now get a much-needed day off after playing eight days in a row, and 17 games in 19 days. They return to the diamond on Saturday when they travel to Moose Jaw to play the Miller Express. They are back in Weyburn Sunday night as they host the Miller Express at Tom Laing Park.
