The upcoming anniversary of Saskatchewan's seatbelt law should serve as a reminder to buckle up this long weekend, according to SGI.

"It was actually 46 years ago this weekend that seatbelts became the law in Saskatchewan, and yet more than four and a half decades later some people in this province still don't wear them," said SGI Spokesperson Tyler McMurchy. "300 to 500 seatbelt tickets are written every month by police here in the province of Saskatchewan. Seatbelts are the quickest, easiest way that you can significantly reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash."

McMurchy said buckling up can reduce your chance of injury or death in a crash by as much as 50 per cent.

"So we just want everyone to buckle up before they hit the road, make sure all the kids in the vehicle are safe and snug in a properly installed car seat or booster if they are young, and drivers are responsible for making sure that anybody under the age of 16 that they are riding with is buckled up as well," he said.

"The best thing that you can do to increase your chance of surviving a crash is making sure that you are buckled up."

McMurchy added that it doesn't matter how good of a driver you are, you could still find yourself in an accident.

"Even if you're the world's best driver, it doesn't mean that you'll never be in a collision," he said. "Some of those things are beyond any driver's control, whether we're talking about wildlife or the actions of other drivers...you want to make sure that you do whatever you can in the event of a collision."
