Winkler Mayor Henry Siemens says a new pathway in the city is already producing many positive comments.

The city has extended the path from the Southland Mall Eastward down Roblin Boulevard to Eastview Drive, then turning south on Eastview to Cargill Road.

"This is an extremely exciting project for us," said Siemens.

Siemens says City Council has wanted to add some pathways in this area for quite some time and hasn't been able to get to it for any number of reasons. "Not the least of which is making right of way agreements, and finding ways to be able to financially do it. But it is, I think, an overdue project. It's a project that we're very happy to see going.

With the pathway complete, Siemens says landscaping work will take place over the next couple of weeks.

The City of Winkler received a $150,000 Building Sustainable Community Grant from the Province earlier this year for phase one of the industrial park pathway expansion.

Siemens shared he has already seen a lot of people using the new pathway.

"We've had some really good comments towards that end. People are very appreciative of the fact that they're now able to get around more safely, are able to walk, to work for some of the businesses in that area. So we've received immediate very positive comments from the community on that already."

Phase two of the project will happen next year, which will further extend the path south, connecting it to the Reinfeld Pathway.

City crews have also made a lot of progress with their road maintenance projects. Siemens says the city's overall road patching in the community is about 80 percent complete.

"People will have had to drive around some of these (projects) and we very much appreciate when people are considerate and take their time around road crews as they're working on it," said Siemens.

Siemens adds another project slated to happen this summer that will improve the ability for people to get around is the Mountain Ave. sidewalk from 4th St. to Hwy. 32. That's anticipated to start later this summer.
