Police have made an arrest after a man who was spending time with his family along the Red River was attacked with a skateboard.
The Winnipeg Police Service says that they were called to the public river dock in the 400 block of Tache Ave. around 10 p.m. on June 29 for a man who had been assaulted. Officers met the man at St. Boniface Hospital where he went to be treated for an upper body injury sustained in the assault.
The WPS says that the Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned the victim had attended the dock with family members when a group, including the suspect, approached them. The suspect group began berating the victim and his family and escalated when the suspect assaulted the victim in the upper body using a skateboard. Investigators believe the assault to be unprovoked and random.
The suspect and victim were not known to one another.
On June 30, officers from the Downtown Foot Patrol located the suspect in the rear lane of the 200 block of Garry Street and placed him under arrest without incident.
A 27-year-old male from Winnipeg was charged with Assault with a Weapon and released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
