The Weyburn Beavers added another W to the win column Wednesday night, defeating the Regina Red Sox with a final score of 5-3 at Tom Laing Park.
Coming off a victory against the Red Sox Tuesday in Regina, the Beavers aimed to maintain their winning momentum. They succeeded in doing so by capitalizing on key opportunities during the game. The Beavers took an early lead, scoring one run in the first inning, thanks to a double by Tyren Dorrance that cashed in Ryan Dauphinee.
The Beavers' offence continued to make an impact in the fourth inning when they scored four runs. The output started with a sacrifice fly by Matt Rachman that brought home Triston Madison. Then, an error allowed Eric Wirun to get on base, and Brayden Mayencourt came home. The final two runs of the inning came when a single to right field by Dauphinee cashed in Wirun and Jaxson Davis. It would also spell the end of the night for Regina’s starting pitcher, Trevor Crawford.
Pitcher Jack Kovanen played a crucial role in securing the victory for the Beavers. He delivered a solid performance, lasting six innings and allowing three runs. Kovanen showcased his skill and composure on the mound, striking out four Regina batters and keeping the Red Sox offence at bay.
Relievers Luke Zimmer and Jacob Clark were instrumental in maintaining the Beavers' lead in the final innings. They combined efforts to shut down the Red Sox offence and secure the win for Weyburn. Clark, in particular, demonstrated his effectiveness as the closer, earning his fourth save of the season.
With this victory, the Weyburn Beavers have won three out of their last four games, However, the road ahead will be challenging for the Beavers as they embark on a demanding stretch of seven consecutive road games. They will not return home to Tom Laing Park until July 23rd.
The road games start Thursday in Medicine Hat.
