Darlene Dorothy Abday
March 7, 1947 – July 14, 2023

The death of Mrs. Darlene Dorothy (née Roettger) Abday of Bethany Pioneer Village, Middle Lake, SK, occurred at her residence on Friday, July 14, 2023. She was 76 years of age. Darlene was born on March 7, 1947, in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Humboldt, SK, to Bernard and Mary (nee Streitenberger) Roettger. She attended Pilger School until Grade 8 and obtained her remaining education (Grade 10) in Humboldt. Darlene started her working career babysitting in Humboldt for a few years. She then worked at Kirsch Construction cooking for the crew. That is where she met her husband, Donald Abday. They dated for a while and were married on July 26, 1969, at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Pilger, SK, and were blessed with two daughters, Karen and Dianne. They began their life together on the farm northeast of Middle Lake where they grain-farmed and raised cattle, pigs and chickens. Darlene was an avid gardener and produced massive amounts of fruits and vegetables to preserve for the winter. She loved picking berries and would spend hours picking Saskatoon berries, raspberries, and chokecherries. She would head out to the berry bushes with her pail strapped around her waist and in a short period of time, she would have several pails of berries to clean and preserve. Darlene was also an excellent cook who was well known for her fried chicken, which she made for every special occasion. As well, she was an amazing baker and was always whipping up something good in the kitchen for her family to eat. One fond memory of her children and grandchildren was her amazing chokecherry syrup that they would put on her crepe pancakes. That was good eating! She will be missed dearly for all the talents she possessed and shared with her family and friends. Darlene will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 54 years, Donald Abday; daughter, Karen Deobald and her family, Rachel, Aaron, Amanda, Michelle, Derek and David; daughter Dianne (Keith) Eisner and their family Alissa, Eric and Ian; brother-in-law Elmer Weyland; sister-in-law Kathy Roettger and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Bernard and Mary (nee Streitenberger) Roettger; father-in-law, Frank Abday; mother-in-law, Irene (Little) Abday; brothers: Raymond Roettger, Clarene Roettger, and Gilbert Roettger; sisters: Irene Urick, Ramona Weyland, Hilda Yungwirth, and Marlene Jaeb (her twin sister); and by brothers-in-law: Fred Urick, Joseph Schriml, Ralph Yungwirth, Duane Frank, and Ervin Jaeb. “The family would like to thank Humboldt Home Care for the excellent care they provided to Darlene during the last four years, and to the staff at Bethany Pioneer Village in Middle Lake during the five weeks she stayed there. Your care and compassion will not be forgotten.” The Funeral Service was held at Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Fr. John Ezeoruonye. Others taking part were: Alissa Eisner and Rachel Abday, scripture readers; Carla Frank, intentions; and Dianne Eisner, eulogist.
