The Weyburn Beavers continued their trek away from Tom Laing Park Monday night with a game in Swift Current against the 57s. While the game was scheduled for nine innings, Mother Nature had other plans, and the game was called after seven innings. The situation didn’t dampen the spirits of the Beavers much, though, as they picked up a 7-4 win, moving to within 2 ½ games of Swift Current for the final playoff spot in the East Division.
Three of the Beavers selected for the All-Star game Saturday in Okotoks led the way for Weyburn, with Ryan Dauphinee, Ryan Muizelaar and Trent Lawson all putting in big performances on the road. Dauphinee hit his second home run of the season, a two-run blast in the 4th, while Lawson drove in two runs thanks to his team-leading 12th double of the season. Muizelaar would finish the game with two doubles of his own, going 4-for-4 at the plate.
On the mound, Luke Zimmer, one of the three pitchers from the Beavers selected for the All-star game, put in another stellar performance, going six innings. He struck out seven while walking one, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Ryan Meyer came on in relief and would face five batters, getting two out, before the field was cleared due to the weather.
Robert Gurney had gotten things started for the Beavers in the first inning when a single to left field brought in two runs with the bases loaded. Then, Lawson hit his double to centre, clearing the bases, giving Weyburn a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Dauphinee would add to the lead in the 4th with his home run to make it 6-0, then Triston Madison finished off the scoring for the game in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly.
The Beavers will now get ready to continue their road trip as they head off to Sylvan Lake for a game Tuesday night.
