The Boyne Regional Library in Carman has been granted $11,643.74 through the latest round of funding from the Manitoba Accessibility Fund.

The money will cover the cost of implementing activities and enhancements to improve accessibility and inclusivity for library patrons with disabilities.

"We are going to increase our large print collection, add a sensible computer station, purchase tools to use for people who have diminished vision," explains Diane Cohoe, assistant librarian. "We're going to provide computer training and that will include how to work with library apps to access electronic books. We also are going to provide read-along books for children with learning disabilities, including iPads with shockproof iPad cases."

Several e-books are available in a dyslexic font said Cohoe.

Among the more innovative tools to be added are reading pens.

"What it does is it allows the person who can still see the lines - like, see the words and see the lines on a book - and they can run the pan across the lines and it will actually read the words to them."

The pens are compatible with ear pods and headphones.

The library is in the midst of its Summer Reading Program, which typically draws over five-hundred children. When registering for the program, Cohoe says every participant is entered into a draw for prizes, the most popular of which is a Family Fun Pack ...

"It has a free night at the Blue Crescent Hotel in a family suite. It includes gift cards and gift certificates for Chicken Chef, Tim Horton's, Syl’s Mini Golf, there are some games in there."

A new prize this year is a metal detector.

"The kids though that was a great prize. We're excited to see where that goes."

Cohoe says as the hub of the community, they offer activities every day and are still going strong.
