A talented pair of Humboldt performers ventured to Saskatoon for a major talent competition and emerged as the number two act.
Saskatoon’s Got Talent is a competition open to provincial performers featuring all brands of entertainment. Musicians, vocalists, dancers and other performers went head-to-head in a competition on the banks of the South Saskatchewan on July 15. Madelyn Lueke and Hailey Brown performed a hip-hop dance routine and wowed the crowd with their performance. The dancers, who study at A-List Dance and Acrobatics, were the youngest in the competition, says their instructor and artistic director of A-List, Alyssa Hinz.
“They were absolutely shocked when they won,” says Hinz, “They didn’t expect to win anything but were kind of going for the experience and something fun to do. When they came out with the second-place win, they were super excited and couldn’t believe it. “
The competition was part of Saskatoon’s YXE Street Eats Festival, the seeming successor to the Taste of Saskatchewan, held at River Landing.
Their hip-hop performance utilized a mash up of popular performers such as Cardy B and Megan Thee Stallion. The performance was their competition duet from their dance season, reworked for the Saskatoon’s Got Talent event. Madelyn is 16 years of age, and Hailey is 14. Both will be returning for more dance study with A-List in the fall.
Going up against other dancers in competition is one thing, but tackling an all-out talent show on a larger scale will no doubt help to bolster the girls’ confidence moving ahead with dance.
“I think this helps them realize that they are very talented, because when you compete against only other dancers, you may not see that there are other opportunities out there. I think that other students will definitely want to take part in things like this in the future. They really look up to these two girls, being older students.”
Following their finish at Saskatoon’s Got Talent, Madelyn and Hailey can number themselves at the top strata of performing acts in Saskatchewan.
