Karen Donalu Pfeiffer
October 17, 1937 – December 31, 2020

The death of Karen Donalu (nee Lung) Pfeiffer of Saskatoon, SK, (and formerly of Verndale, SK), occurred at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, SK, on December 31, 2020. She was 83 years of age. Karen was born to Leonard and Elvie (nee Bauman) Lung on October 17, 1937, two months premature, at Lake Lenore Hospital. She was the middle child of seven children. Karen was so small that she could fit nicely in the palm of her dad’s hand. They also put her in a shoe box on the wood stove door to keep her warm. Karen attended Selmond School in Verndale from grades 1 to 8, and then Lake Lenore High School from grades 9 to 12. Following her graduation, she attended nurses training at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Humboldt and received her R.N. diploma in 1959. Karen worked at both Nipawin and Humboldt hospitals. On June 10, 1960, she married Gilbert Pfeiffer. Together they raised four children and ran a mixed grain farm operation. Also, during that time, she worked part-time at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Humboldt until she had an accident. She was helping to move a patient when they fell on her, landing her flat on her back, thus ending her nursing career. Karen loved sewing, gardening, painting, picking berries, and playing cards. Karen was also the nurse of Verndale; if anyone had any health concerns, she was called first and then they were taken to the hospital if need be. She was a member of the Verndale Ladies’ Club, the Verndale Hall Board, and the Saskatchewan Association of Nurses. In 1998, Karen moved to Humboldt. She was an active member of the good Neighbour Store and the Royal Canadian Legion. She became a great-grandmother in 2013 and relished that new role. She felt so blessed to see four great-grandchildren born. Karen leaves to cherish her memory her four children, six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren: son, Brent Pfeiffer of Lake King, Western Australia; son, Timothy (Sheila) Pfeiffer and family, Nicole (Brett) Mola and daughter Sophie, Dwayne (Amy) Pfeiffer and daughters Rosie and Julia, all of Mundijong, Australia; son, Lawrence Pfeiffer and children Emma and Alex, all of Calgary, AB; daughter, Holly (Philip) Swanson and family, Kyle (Raelene) Swanson and children Clyde, Magnus, Zalia, and Emmett, all of Verndale, SK, and Karrah (Josh) Rebalkin and son Miller, all of Wainwright, AB; three brothers: Leonard (Angela) Lung, Dwayne (Marilyn) Lung, and Dale (Myrna) Lung; sister, Penny (Allan) Stuckel; sister-in-law, Darlene Lung; and by extended families, friends and neighbours. She was predeceased by her husband, Gilbert Pfeiffer; daughter-in-law, Bernadette Pfeiffer; parents, Leonard and Elvie (nee Bauman) Lung; sister, Evelyn (Jim) Broderick; brother, Ivan Lung; and by parents-in-law, Roy and Josephine (nee Hanke) Pfeiffer. The Graveside Service was held at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Verndale, on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Clint Magnus. The urnbearer was Brent Pfeiffer, and the eulogist was Tim Pfeiffer. Honorary pallbearers were all of Karen’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be directed to the Humboldt Good Neighbour Store.
