Alexandria “Alice” Germann
September 8, 1935 – July 24, 2023

87 Years

It is with great sorrow that our family announces the peaceful passing of Alice Germann, on Monday, July 24, 2023, at the Grande Prairie Care Centre, at the age of 87 years.

Alice was born on September 8, 1935, in Plunkett District, SK. She completed her elementary education at Badger School, middle years at Plunkett, and high school at Bruno Academy. Following high school, she pursued her dream to become a teacher and obtained her teaching certificate at Saskatoon Normal School. Alice first taught in the Yukon, then Biggar, and finally Humboldt, SK. While working, studying, volunteering, and raising a family, she obtained her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Saskatchewan.

In 1961, Alice married Walter Germann and was blessed with three children: Paula, Karl, and Cheri. Alice dedicated her life to her family, career, and community. Alice enjoyed supporting her children and encouraged them to pursue extra-curricular activities. She loved to read them stories and continued to do so with her grandchildren. Ukrainian traditions were always part of Alice’s life. She always provided delicious dishes for her family and friends, including the best buns, cookies, cakes, homemade soups, and full Sunday dinners. She enjoyed preparing the 12 traditional Ukrainian dishes for Christmas Eve and passed on the many recipes to her family and friends for all to share. She loved to share with others and was an exceptional cook – the words barely describe her love of food preparation and giving. Alice especially enjoyed pinching perogies and making soups.

Many days with family were spent camping or at the cabin at Emma Lake in Saskatchewan. Those memories will be cherished by everyone.

Alice taught at St. Dominic and St. Augustine School for over 30 years, teaching grades three and four because she wanted to give children the gift of education, as education is the future. She loved teaching phonics and math and was delighted to see her students learn and excel. She went above and beyond for her students and created new and exciting classrooms every year.

Alice volunteered with the CWL at St. Augustine’s Parish for over 50 years, served on the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for more than 50 years and was the President for many years. Alice was further involved in the community, including the Elizabethans, Muenster College, St. Mary’s Villa, and the Humboldt and District Gallery. She loved every aspect about service to the community and helping others tirelessly.

Alice always had her own little stash of Doublemint or Juicy Fruit gum and little pink and white peppermints to share. As a treat she would order Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Alice spent many hours with her mom and siblings. She worked on many beautiful bedspreads and quilts together with her sister and her mother. Harvesting and enjoying the produce from the garden was a delight for Alice, especially raspberries and rhubarb. Growing up on the farm with three brothers and one sister, she enjoyed playing ball, the sport she loved.

The community of Humboldt was her home and her heart. However, in 2020 due to her health, and the need for support she moved in with her son Karl, then Emerald Gardens in Grande Prairie, the Grande Prairie Hospital, and then Grande Prairie Care Centre. She enjoyed her time in Humboldt and Grande Prairie and left a footprint in the hearts of the staff and other residents.

She was a kind, generous, giving person who loved all of those around her. She shared in the joy of being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, friend, and volunteer. Alice will be forever in our hearts, memories, and stories as she shared in a beautiful life well lived. She will live in the aromas and flavor of the foods we eat, the gifts of the many contributions she made to family and community, and the grace of God. She had an enduring impact of kindness and compassion, of which she seemed to have an endless supply of.

Alice will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by her three children and their families including seven grandchildren and two great grandsons: Paula Germann of Edmonton, AB, and her children Mallory Becker (Jeff Ryks and their children Evan and Jackson Ryks) and Brittany Becker; Karl (Leanne) Germann of Grande Prairie and their children Braydon Germann (Karen Dancy) of Airdrie, AB, Jayson (Kara) Protz and their children Olivia Protz and Andrew Doulius; Dawn (Connor) Martin and their children: William, Makenna, Jaydon Martin; Cheri (Trevor) Lloyd of Lloydminster, AB, and their children Tori and TJ; sister in-law Eva Senko; She is also remembered by numerous nephews and nieces.

Alice was predeceased by her loving husband Walter Germann of 50 years; sister Helen (Frank) Saretsky; and brothers: Alec (Olga) Senko, Ted Senko, and Steve (Elsie) Senko. Alice was also predeceased by her parents John and Mary (nee Byj) Senko.
