Three people are in hospital following a serious multi-vehicle collision at the same intersection where 17 people were killed in a collision with a semi six weeks ago.
The Manitoba RCMP says in a release that on July 31, 2023, at approximately 4:45 pm, Blue Hills RCMP received a report of a multi-vehicle collision at the junction of Highway 1 and Highway 5 in the RM of North Cypress-Langford.
Three vehicles were involved in the crash and the RCMP says their Initial investigation has determined that a pickup truck southbound on Highway 5 entered the intersection at Highway 1, colliding with an eastbound SUV. The collision between the two caused the vehicles to push across the highway, where they collided with a third vehicle, which was waiting at a stop sign on Highway 5, south of Highway 1.
“We very much appreciate that this may be extraordinarily upsetting for some people considering the recent mass casualty collision at the same intersection,” said Inspector Lee Fortin of RCMP West District.
Two of the people involved were taken to a local hospital while a third was taken to a Winnipeg hospital. The RCMP says that while injuries appear serious at this time, no fatalities are reported.
"This is very early in this investigation and we need to do our work to confirm information and determine what happened. We will provide updates as soon as we are able."
On June 15 a minibus carrying seniors from Dauphin, Man., was struck by a semi at the same intersection. Seventeen people in total were killed in that collision and RCMP say they realize news of Monday's crash could be unsettling for some. “We urge anyone who is triggered by this incident to seek appropriate supports,” the RCMP says.
