SaskPower says the province broke a summer power usage record of 3,669 megawatts on Monday at 4:55 p.m.

It breaks the record set last August by 72 megawatts.

The record comes as a heatwave hit the province with many areas hitting daily highs of above 30 degrees over several days.

SaskPower is expecting that another record could be set within the week.

According to SaskPower, Saskatchewan usually experiences its overall highest peak loads in the winter. The all-time demand record of 3,910 megawatts was set on Dec. 30, 2021.

SaskPower is offering tips to conserve power throughout the summer months including:

  • Ensure your air conditioner is operating as efficiently as possible by having it inspected routinely by a licensed professional.
  • Consider investing in a programmable or smart thermostat to ensure your home is being cooled only when needed.
  • Close blinds and window coverings during the daytime to keep the heat out and ensure all doors and windows are closed tightly.
  • Delay activities that produce heat and moisture, such as dishwashing or laundry, until later in the day or into the evening when temperatures are cooler.
