The Emerald Ash Borer which was first detected in Winnipeg in 2017, has still not moved our way yet.

This is great news, since the Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive species and is highly destructive to ash trees.

Arborist Chris Freund out of Steinbach says they have been confined to Winnipeg. He believes them to be in the Saint Boniface Windsor Park area.

“Typically once they get into an area, they are kind of there to stay. Some of the bigger jurisdictions with a more hospitable climate for them, within eight to 10 years, most ash trees would be lost.”

He says some speculate the spread is slower in our province because of the harsh climates that we see in Manitoba compared to Southern Ontario or the U.S.

“They were detected in 2017 and we're now 2023 and it's been pretty well confined.”

The insect has killed millions of ash trees in the U.S. and in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec.
