Shirley Powell
May 9, 1935 – August 17, 2023

Shirley was the second of six children born to Wilfred and Edna Smith on May 9, 1935, in Bengough, Saskatchewan. She was raised on a farm and attended Hexagon School until she had completed her Grade 10. Shirley the decided to venture out on her own which led her to Regina, SK, where she worked at a laundry. After she worked in bakeries in Saskatoon, SK, and Edmonton Alberta. Due to a knee injury Shirley moved back to Bengough to recover. It was here that she met the love of her life, Leonard. They were married on October 11, 1957, and were blessed with three children. Together Shirley and Leonard farmed south of Burr and although they faced many challenges, there were also many rewards. Asif being a mom and farm wife wasn’t enough, Shirley decided to return to the workforce. She began working at Central Parkland Lodge in Lanigan in 1975, a career that span 19 years. Shirley very much enjoyed her time working for the elderly. In her spare time Shirley enjoyed crocheting and knitting, her family was the recipients of much of her handiwork, that was made with so much love. She was also pretty handy in the kitchen, no family meal was complete without “Grandma Buns”, her coveted homemade freezer jam or her homemade apple pie. As the years went on and the grandchildren and great-grandchildren arrived, they became a great source of enjoyment for her. She spent countless hours rocking, cuddling, playing, and teaching them. Shirley and Leonard also enjoyed travelling, visiting the Islands of Hawaii, Yukon/Alaska tour, a six-week European adventure, a drive to the east coast of Canada and a memorable cruise of the Panama Canal. Shirley’s dedication and love of family also extended to her community as she spent more than 30 years on the Guernsey Recreation Board. Many spring suppers, parades, homecomings, card tournaments, stew suppers and fundraisers were organized with Shirley’s help. In 2003, Shirley and Leonard decided to retire from farming but remained on the family farm until July of 2020, when they moved to Humboldt. Shirley will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by: her husband of 65 years, Leonard; their three children and their families: Kevin (Betty) Powell, and family: Natasha (Charles) Hampton, and children Taylor, Mason, Nick and Luke; Mitchell (Bethany Mackinnon) Powell; and Brett (Rebecca Turpin) Powell; Debra (Terry) Schatz and family: Sara (Dax) Irons, and child Brogan; Tanner (Jenelle) Schatz, and children Elise and Hazel; and Stacie (Louis) Stilling; David (Denise) Powell, and family: Melissa (Geoff Yaworski) Powell, and children Dominik, Kayden, Nash and Ben; Courtney (Justin) Kaufmann, and children Elle and Quinn; and Tylor Powell; and numerous brothers and sisters in-laws, nieces, nephews and her many friends.
