Airdronian Emily Marston is reflecting on her opportunity to become Miss Universe Canada 2023.

While the current Miss Calgary did not win the competition, when it came to individual pieces like runway modeling, she placed in the top three.

"That's a huge accomplishment for me, just because I have been told that I'm too big to be a runway model. To place top three out of 60 girls at the biggest competition in Canada is huge."

There are multiple categories Marston competed in, including personal interview, runway, fashion, swimsuit, fitness, final questions, and final interview.

"We're doing it under extreme pressure, because we're up at 5 a.m. in the morning, and we're down in the lobby ready to go as our day starts at 7 a.m. and we don't get back until midnight that night for an entire week. On top of all of that, we're doing rehearsals, and we're learning our choreography."

The contestants also had to do their humanitarian work, meet and greets while still needing to go on stage and perform.

While the competition is officially over, Marston still has an opportunity to make an international event.

"There are quite a few titles that get handed out besides Miss Universe Canada. It's up to the directors and the judges as to who will get those as there's five to 10 depending on how many girls they want to send to international competitions."

Marston stated it will take around a month to find out if she will receive any of those titles.

"This week I go back to work as Miss Calgary, getting back into the community again and making my year what I wanted it to be which was getting my hands in the dirt and getting involved. That's going to be my main focus for the rest of the year."

When asked if she plans on attending Miss Universe Canada next year, Marston is undecided.

The event was held in Vancouver.
